Judith Joseph

Judith Joseph’s lifelong connection with art began with a love of picture books as a child. Story-telling kept a hold on her, as well as attention to detail and symbolism. Her childhood love of fairy tales grew up into a sort of magical realism. Joseph’s connection to literature and languages finds expression in the practice of calligraphy, which she pairs with illustration in much of her work, such as Ketubot. A deep connection with nature and folkloric mythology rounds out her aesthetic, filling her imagery with mystical birds in enchanted forests.

Judith Joseph lives in Chicago, Illinois. She exhibits widely, nationally and internationally. Her work is in hundreds of private and public collections, including the Chicago Public Library, North Shore Congregation Israel (Glencoe, Illinois) and the Milwaukee Public Museum. Solo and two-person exhibitions include: University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Zack Gallery (Vancouver, Canada), Kraft Gallery (Columbia University, NY) and ARC Gallery (Chicago).

Judith Joseph received Illinois Artists' Fellowship Awards in 1998 and 2004. Her art has been featured in numerous books, magazines and web publications, including Wisconsin Artists: A Celebration of Jewish Presence(Marquette University Press, 1994),The Passover Celebration (illustrations), LTP, 2004, Shma Journal, Hashalom Magazine of Durban, S.A., Queens College Journal of Jewish Studies, New York; Blood And Thunder, U. of Oklahoma Press, and Letter Arts Review.
