David Rubman

David Rubman has been a woodworker for 25 years, moving from traditional Japanese furniture, to folk-art inspired furniture and “quilts” made from found-objects, to his current work as a wood sculptor. He has been exhibiting in Chicago and Evanston for the last ten years, including shows at Oliva Gallery, Alma Gallery, and at various Evanston Made group shows. His folk-art sculpture Monolith 2012, made of 10,000 Scrabble tiles, is in the collection of Ripley’s Believe it or Not! museums.

Although his work is not thematically Jewish, he identifies as a Jewish artist. In his words, “my work is formed from my interest in non-Western and folk art, which, I’m guessing, comes from growing up in a distinctly late-20th century liberal Jewish milieu steeped in folk music and folk traditions.”
